According to the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage & Arts, more than 500 litres of lubricating oil is sold each year in Australia with over half of this oil available for collection and recycling after use. Last year Australians recycled approximately 194 million litres, or 80%, of their used oil. Even though this rate is high, between 60 and 100 million litres remains unaccounted for.
WASTE OIL IS HAZARDOUS, TOXIC, CARCINOGENIC & HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT WHEN IRRESPONSIBILITY DISCARDED!!!!
Anecdotal evidence suggests that the remaining used oil is either:
- Sitting in temporary stockpiles (eg. in the garage or shed);
- Retained in waste or scrap equipment (such as vehicles);
- Lost in the environment at collection points (eg. leaking, spills etc);
- Illegally dumped (in parks and reserves or in waterways and stormwater drains).
The NIRW Used Oil Recycling Program will have the following objectives:
- Provision of an economic service on a regional level
- Protection of the environment
