Second Hand Saturday acts as a huge neighbourhood garage sale for the sale of appropriate goods between residents on the weekend before a scheduled general household clean-up by Council. Not only does Second Hand Saturday help to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, it also enables residents to participate in the promotion of reuse, one of the Key Strategic Areas of NIRW.
The NIRW Second Hand Saturday Program will have the following objectives:
- Increased community awareness of reuse
- Increase in waste diversion rates
- Decrease in Council collection costs
This is an opportunity for residents of the New England & North West of New South Wales to give away or sell items that they have around their house and yard that they no longer want and collect item they may be able to use from others in the area.
Second Hand Saturday helps the environment by reducing the amount of waste for Council clean-ups and promoting reuse of goods instead of disposal. These savings not only benefit the environment but rate payers as the costs of waste management are reduced.
As well as helping the environment, the event brings together people in the neighbourhood and from outside the area in support of the community.
